Divemaster Scuba are one of the UK's leading Diver Training Centres. Based in N.E. Derbyshire we have training facilities in Nottingham, Chesterfield and Sheffield, with up to 5 pool sessions per week. The largest being 25 metres square and 6 metres deep. Our Dive Centre is the largest Scuba only facility in the region. We have full-time Scuba Instructors. Most of our current team have worked abroad as dive professional and between them have a wealth of talent and experience. Mike is dual qualified both being Advanced BS-AC (British Sub-Aqua Club) Instructors and can speak from experience regarding crossover qualifications.

Becoming a Professional Diving Instructor takes time and commitment. Before you choose which Centre to do your IDC (Instructor Development Course) with, call in and have a chat. Join us on one of our training sessions. Check out our facilities. Meet the people. There is a vast difference between being taught to become an Instructor and learning to become a Dive Professional.

For your Information:
As an experienced diver there are two ways to become a PADI Scuba Instructor. The first which is what's known as a full IDC is basically for PADI Divemasters or Instructors from other Agencies. The course takes you through the PADI Assistant Instructor program which covers theory and practical pool training and then on to the full Open Water Scuba Instructor course. The second is the OWSI (Open Water Scuba Instructor) designed for PADI Assistant Instructors.

IDC (Instructor Development Course) and AI (Assistant Instructor) Course Prerequisites
To enroll on an AI/IDC program, a applicant must:

  • Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification from another recreational diver training organisation
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be fit for diving and submit an approved medical conducted within in the past 12 months**
  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months and completed and logged at least 60 open water dives* and have documented experience in deep, night and navigation diving
  • Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months
  • Submit proof of any qualifying certification used
  • If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue assessment

OWSI Course (Open Water Scuba Instructor) Prerequisites:
To enroll on an OWSI program, a applicant must:

  • Be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor or as a current instructor member in good standing with another recreational diver training organisation
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be fit for diving and submit an approved medical conducted within in the past 12 months**

All air is supplied during the course. Remember to bring the appropriate thermal protection for the time of year and for the dive site where open water sessions will take place.

What happens on the IDC?
As with all PADI programs the AI, OWSI and IDC are performance based. However, they have the following minimum times:

  • An IDC is a minimum of 7 days
  • An AI course is a minimum of 3 days
  • An OWSI program is a minimum of 4 days

Some programs are run evenings and weekends, minimising the amount of time you need to take off work. However, most candidates find it more beneficial to concentrate on the programs without distractions.

Over the 7 days you will attend 20 presentations from your PADI Course Director & Divemaster Scuba IDC staff.

  • You will learn how to prepare and present knowledge development sessions for all PADI courses and present at least four presentations scoring 3.5*** or higher on at least one presentation
  • You will learn how to prepare and present confined water teaching presentations and present at least four confined water presentations scoring 3.4*** or higher on at least one presentation.
  • You will also learn how to prepare and present open water teaching presentations and present at least two presentations (two skills in each) and score 3.5*** or higher.

You must also:

  • Demonstrate competence at performing all 20 dive skills listed on the Skill Evaluation slate. Candidates must score a minimum of 68 points in total with no score below 3. (This is the same as the Divemaster skill circuit ).
  • Score 75% or higher on all five sections of the Instructor pre-assessment exam
  • Perform a face down snorkel/fin swim non stop for 800 metres

All this in 7 days - However, this is ample time but it requires your total commitment to the course. We Guarantee you will receive our total commitment throughout the course to ensure you success as a PADI Instructor.

***The Scoring system – The whole process is very open & nothing is hidden. You are supplied with a copy of the evaluation (scoring) sheets that the Course Director & staff use to evaluate your performance, these are the same as the PADI Instructors Examiners use during the IE. Knowledge, confined water & open water teaching presentations are scored on a 1 to 5 basis. Your performance of in water skills is scored on a 1 to 5 basis and in the written theory exams you will need to score a minimum of 75%.

Dates and locations of the PADI Instructor Examinations (IE) are available on the www site here. Contact PADI directly for confirmation.
